Some moments are divided into a before and an after.
For our family, that moment came on August 3, 2026.
What followed would forever reshape our understanding of suffering, generosity and the extraordinary difference a simple act of kindness can make.
The Day Everything Changed

On an ordinary August afternoon, my husband Jon, experienced a devastating accident at our home, resulting in second-and third-degree burns covering his entire face, arms and legs. In a single moment, the familiar rhythm of our lives was replaced by something we could neither prepare for nor fully comprehend.
He was life flighted to Vanderbilt burn center in Nashville, TN – and I followed, arriving in Nashville well after midnight. At that point, the world had settled into the dark stillness of nightfall – everything had gone quiet. But for me, I was far from home and separated from our children – in an unknown city in the dead of night – and my husband was fighting for his life.
Those first few hours will forever remain with me.
I stood in the unfamiliar corridors of Vanderbilt’s burn ICU, trying to find my footing in a reality that still felt impossible to comprehend. It is profoundly disorientating watching the person you love suffer through the excruciating agony of 21% burns. An agony that stretches many days beyond the initial injury as burns progress or show themselves.
Fear and exhaustion settled into my bones. With a burn injury, the questions have no answers for many days. Time stood still while we waited. Yet, within this significant pause the ordinary necessities of life remained. Somewhere to sleep. Something to eat. Navigating what should feel like simple decisions – are anything but simple.
I now understand how much a family carries when someone they love is critically injured. How suffering reaches beyond the patient and quietly settles into the lives of everyone waiting, hoping, praying, and trying to remain strong.
And although I could not have known it then, those first critical hours in the burn ICU would eventually become the very place where a new purpose began to take root.
THE KINDESS THAT FOUND US
The Kindness We Received Became a Calling to Extend It
What was given to us in love became something we felt called to give forward…
The Long Road Back
What followed was not a single moment of recovery, but countless small moments of endurance.
There were surgeries, painful dressing changes, fragile new skin, and the exhausting work of healing injuries that had changed so much of Jon’s body. Progress was measured differently now. In wounds beginning to close. In movement slowly returning. In the smallest signs that his body was finding its way back.
And there was the part of healing that could not be seen.
Learning to trust his body again. Finding strength where there had been weakness. Facing the uncertainty of what would return, what might take longer, and what life might look like on the other side.
Through it all, I watched my husband meet a kind of suffering I could never have fully understood before. I witnessed both the extraordinary resilience of the human body and the quiet determination required to endure its healing.
Recovery did not happen all at once. It came slowly, imperfectly, and often through days that asked more of him than anyone could see.
But with each small step forward, we were reminded of something we had nearly lost sight of in those first terrifying hours: there was still so much life waiting to be lived.
A Legacy of Kindness
What began as our experience became a desire to make the journey gentler for those who would follow.

Somewhere, Another Family’s Story Is About to Change
We may never know when that moment will come. But, together, we can make certain that when it does, there is someone ready to meet them with the support they desperately need.
Help us be there when it matters most.
